Colts will again have competition for starting center position

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts will have a competition for the starting center position.

This is not a flashback to last offseason. Not a flashback to last season, either.

This is a new situation involving two of the same players.

Despite Khaled Holmes starting the final five games of the season -- two regular season and three playoff games -- coach Chuck Pagano isn't ready to name him the permanent starter.

"I think we are going to have great competition going into the offseason," Pagano said. "You have the other guys in there that played a bunch of games, Jonotthan Harrison, right? I think we have great competition. Man sharpens man like iron sharpens iron. Those guys know how we roll in that building. He's (Holmes) up for that challenge, just like Jon is and the rest of the those guys. It's about production. It's about playing well."

You would think the Colts would have settled on a starting center for their franchise player, quarterback Andrew Luck.

Here's a checklist of players who have started at center since the Colts selected Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in 2012: Samson Satele, Mike McGlynn, A.Q. Shipley, Harrison and Holmes.

Holmes, the Colts' fourth-round draft pick in 2013, was the projected starter last season. He was injured in the preseason opener and ended up spending most of the season on the sideline watching. Harrison replaced the injured Holmes, but an injured thumb caused the Colts to sign Shipley a week before the season opener against Denver in Week 1. Harrison, an undrafted rookie last season, replaced Shipley in Week 5 and struggled at times before Pagano finally benched in him favor of Holmes in Week 16.

"[Holmes] came in and did a great job," Pagano said. "I'm not going to discount what he did for us down the stretch, he played well. Again, he'll probably break the huddle with the first unit when we line up may be on April 20th but who knows what's going to happen. We have a lot of faith and a ton of trust in Khaled. Again, we are going to try add other guys. We've got guys in the building. We've got guys in that room that are good football players so the competition will be heated. It will be good."
