@MikeWellsNFL possible return of Dwight Freeney in Indy ? #coltsmail

Mike Wells: Are you trying to make things more interesting at bingo on Thursday nights for the Indianapolis Colts players over the age of 30? It's highly unlikely that the Colts would bring Freeney back for a second go-round. The Colts have serious concerns about Robert Mathis and his torn Achilles. That's why owner Jim Irsay said Mathis may not be ready to return until November without even being asked about him earlier this week. But the Colts are comfortable that they can get by if Mathis is out until November. Trent Cole will likely get the first crack at starting (again, if Mathis isn't ready). Cole has 85.5 sacks in his career. Jonathan Newsome led the Colts in sacks as a rookie with 6.5 last season. "With the addition of Trent, the emergence of Newsome, Bjoern [Werner] in spots has done a good job, [Erik] Walden had his best year as a rusher and then there's a cluster of guys that have been hurt that I thought showed tremendous promise before their injuries with Cam Johnson, even [Daniel] Adongo," Grigson said.
@MikeWellsNFL is safety still #1 priority? Who is out there in free agency if we cant pick up someone productive in the draft? #coltsmail

Wells: It's slim pickings on the free-agent market at the safety position. I wrote about this topic on Wednesday. The top remaining free-agent safeties, according to Bill Polian's list, are Stevie Brown, Quintin Demps, Dwight Lowery and Quinton Carter. It's obviously important that the Colts get a capable starter alongside Mike Adams, but they also have to get a young safety so that they can have a player for the present and future at that position.
@MikeWellsNFL any chance bob lamey gets invited to veteran combine in '16 as a nosetackle? #coltsmail

Wells: I'm only including this in the mailbag because it's pretty funny and Bob Lamey, the longtime radio voice of the Colts, will likely get a chuckle out of it too. But no, he won't be lining up trying to help the Colts stuff the run. He'll be the first to tell you that he enjoys his seat up on the radio booth describing and getting excited every time Andrew Luck does something incredible or T.Y. Hilton beats a defensive back for a big play.
@MikeWellsNFL At this point do you expect the Colts starting SS to be a vet FA or a 2015 draft pick? #coltsmail

Wells: If I had to put odds on it, I'd say it's somebody on the roster or a player they draft. I'd be surprised if the Colts -- at this point in free agency -- signed a player who's currently on the market. Of course, that could change between now and the start of training camp in July. General manager Ryan Grigson talked about Dewey McDonald and Winston Guy when he met with just a select few reporters during owners meetings in Phoenix earlier this week. You have to assume McDonald plays safety a lot better than he catches the football (Dallas Cowboys game Week 16 last season).
