          Mailbag Part I: Will the Indianapolis Colts draft a running back?

          Mike Wells: The Indianapolis Colts will likely select a running back at some point in the draft. But you can’t pick a round, especially after the first one, and say they’re going to address a certain position because there are always curve balls thrown in the draft. A player may fall or a team could make a surprise pick, causing teams to adjust their draft board. It’s no secret that the Colts need to pick a running back at some point because Frank Gore will be 32 years old next season. Selecting a running back this season allows that player to adjust to the NFL without having the pressure of having to be the every-down back. That’s Gore’s job. Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon and Georgia’s Todd Gurley are the top running backs in this year’s draft.

          Wells: Hakeem Nicks did have a solid finish to the season, but I’d be surprised to see him back in a Colts uniform next season. They have T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson, Duron Carter, Donte Moncrief and Griff Whalen on the roster. General manager Ryan Grigson is also very high on some of the receivers they had on the practice squad last season like Ryan Lankford and Josh Lenz. You have to wonder if the Colts would have pursued Johnson had Nicks been productive the entire season, and not just in spurts.

          Wells: I see them going after a safety if Landon Collins happens to fall to them at No. 29. But since you only gave me two choices, I’ll say defensive lineman at No. 29 because they do have a lot of bodies on the offensive line. It’s a matter of getting their injured bodies back -- Donald Thomas, Hugh Thornton and Gosder Cherilus -- so that they can see where they fit with the rest of offensive linemen. The Colts signed Kendall Langford but there are still questions at defensive tackle after they decided against pursuing players like Vince Wilfork, who signed with Houston.

          Wells: Those changes already happened. The Colts named Jim Hostler as receivers coach, Tim Berbenich as defensive assistant, Hal Hunter as offensive line coach, Brad White as outside linebackers coach and Charlie Williams moved from receivers coach and became the new running backs coach after the team and David Walker parted ways.
