HOUSTON -- Short weeks are never easy on NFL players, and this one in particular won't be easy on the Houston Texans.
Receiver Cecil Shorts probably won't be playing Thursday against the Indianapolis Colts, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. Shorts suffered a dislocated left shoulder on the last play of the Texans' 48-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He wore a sling on Monday.
"Of course you don’t want to get hurt in no part of the game," Shorts said. "But the last play, it is what it is. Just got to move on and get back as fast as I can."
There's a chance cornerback Kareem Jackson won't play either, as he works through the league's concussion protocol. Jackson left Sunday's game just before halftime to begin the concussion protocol. Unless he didn't actually have a concussion, it'll be tough for Jackson to make it through the protocol in just three days.
Update: The Texans have updated that Jackson passed his concussion test on Sunday and did not have to enter the protocol during the week. That's good news for the Texans who will have him for Thursday's game.
O'Brien listed receiver Nate Washington, safety Quintin Demps and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus as day to day.
Without both Shorts and Washington, the Texans would have four available receivers -- DeAndre Hopkins and rookies Chandler Worthy, Keith Mumphery and Jaelen Strong. Both Worthy and Strong were inactive on Sunday and Strong, the Texans' third-round draft pick, has been inactive for the past three games.
O'Brien said the Texans are working through some potential roster moves at the position.
I'd be concerned about depth at outside linebacker, too if Mercilus weren't able to play. The Texans have four players there -- Jadeveon Clowney, Mercilus, John Simon and Kourtnei Brown, whom they signed last week off Tampa Bay's practice squad.
No team goes into a Thursday game fully healthy and the Texans will be no exception.
