Total breakdown: Broncos select QB Trevor Siemian in seventh round

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A few quick thoughts on the Denver Broncos' seventh-round draft pick.

The pick: Trevor Siemian, quarterback, Northwestern

My take: This is clearly a developmental pick for the Broncos, and given they used one of their compensatory picks to select Siemian, they likely didn't think they would have been able to sign him as an undrafted rookie. Siemian, who suffered a torn ACL he suffered in November, will not be ready to go when he arrives in Denver. At 6-foot-2 7/8-inches tall, 220 pounds, he has the size the Broncos want in their quarterbacks. But 2015 may be a gray shirt year for him as he works back from the injury and makes the transition into a more traditional offense from Northwestern's version of the spread.

Down the road: Siemian is a projection, a work in progress. Not only is he coming off a season-ending knee injury from 2014, but he started just 14 games in his career with the Wildcats, with 11 of those starts coming this past season before his injury. He split snaps with Kain Colter in his sophomore and junior seasons, so Siemian did not attempt more than 392 passes in any of his seasons at the school and had fewer than 300 attempts in three of his four seasons. This is a player the Broncos will first get healthy and then try to develop to see what he can become.
