Greg Smith was going to be the odd big man out if the Mavs signed Jermaine O’Neal last season.

It’d be a surprise if Smith’s stay in Dallas doesn’t end this summer. He might have to head overseas or to the D-League to continue his career.

Smith is only 24, but he hasn’t shown the potential to merit the Mavs investing more time in him. They’d rather fill that roster spot with a better developmental prospect or a veteran more prepared to contribute if called upon.
