Cowboys open to possibilities, hosting variety of players before draft

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys have needs all across the board when it comes to the draft, and their top-30 draft visitors will include a number of defensive ends, cornerbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Ohio State’s Joey Bosa, Oregon’s DeForest Buckner and Clemson’s Shaq Lawson will be in for a visit. The Cowboys had a private workout with Bosa and he has been most linked to the Cowboys at No. 4. He had more than 20 sacks in his career, but there are questions as to whether he can be an elite pass-rusher. Buckner had 10.5 sacks last season, but there are some who see him as a 3-4 defensive end and not as much of a match for a 4-3 scheme. Lawson could be viewed by some teams as an outside linebacker in a 3-4, but he had 12.5 sacks last season.

In free agency, the Cowboys added defensive end Benson Mayowa and have not made an effort to keep Greg Hardy. They have had talks recently with the agent for Jack Crawford, but he made visits to other teams last week.

Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins will also visit.

At cornerback, the Cowboys re-signed Morris Claiborne but have Brandon Carr with a $13.8 million cap figure that they would like to reduce. Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey and Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves III will be among the visitors to Valley Ranch, as well. Ramsey could also be an option at safety, which could put last year’s No. 1 pick, Byron Jones, back at corner.

The Cowboys are also scheduled to meet with running backs Ezekiel Elliott, Derrick Henry, Paul Perkins, Kenyan Drake and C.J. Prosise. Elliott could be an option with the fourth overall pick as the best runner in the draft. The Cowboys worked him out at Ohio State in the past two weeks, after they signed Alfred Morris to a two-year deal.

Henry, the Heisman Trophy winner, would look to be a good fit for the Cowboys' offense but received a lot of work at Alabama that has teams wondering about his long-term success.

At receiver, Ole Miss’ Laquon Treadwell and Pitt’s Tyler Boyd are scheduled to be two of the visitors.

Treadwell has been compared to Dez Bryant by some draft analysts. He didn’t time the fastest at his pro day but he plays fast. He returned from a serious knee injury to catch 82 passes for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

Treadwell would be an early-round pick, although he's unlikely to go at No. 4. Boyd is looked at as a second-day pick after having two 1,000-yard seasons in three years at Pitt. He caught 91 passes for 926 yards as a junior last season.
