Can Browns get enough outside pass rush to sustain momentum?

The Cleveland Browns seem to have corrected their rushing defense woes and have found creative ways to apply enough pass-rush pressure to get off the field.

But while this week's opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, have 19 sacks from 12 different players, the Browns have four sacks from the outside linebacker spot -- generally considered the most important pass-rushing position in a 3-4 defense.

Eventually the Browns will need more.

The Browns do mix enough defensive formulas where it's not all on the outside rush. Barkevious Mingo, for example, often drops into coverage. Inside linebackers Karlos Dansby, Chris Kirksey and Craig Robertson have combined for four of the team's 10 sacks.

With Mingo struggling (dominant rushers aren't asked to cover all that much, after all), the onus is on outside linebackers Paul Kruger and Jabaal Sheard (two sacks apiece) to give the Browns what they need.

Jacksonville's line has allowed 19 sacks on the year, so perhaps this becomes a big numbers week for Cleveland edge rushers.

To be sure, Kruger and Sheard have been solid. Coach Mike Pettine likes how his pass rush got to Ben Roethlisberger a few times last week, even if the sack numbers weren't high.

But he acknowledges the rush needs improvement. Mingo hasn't played like a No. 6 overall pick. So far, there hasn't been enough to suggest quarterbacks will fear the Browns' rush all year. That can change, of course. And it's not all about sacks.

"It’s important that if we’re not sacking the quarterback, we’re at least affecting him," Pettine said. "If we tip a ball, we change the game."

If Mingo imposes his will, this conversation is different. Then you've got a three-man rush.
