BEREA, Ohio -- The great Jason Gibbs of ESPN Cleveland (@BGSUGibbs) is again keeping track of Johnny Manziel's practice stats.
Gibbs' detailed breakdown for Day 1 is here. We'll just sum up the numbers from the practice. Unofficial numbers are for 11-on-11 team drills, and for 7-on-7. They at least give an inkling into accuracy and choices.
Thursday's work was in "shells" -- no full pads. The Collective Bargaining Agreement's terms do not let coaches start the team in pads immediately, instead mandating a three-day period to allow players to work into camp.
In a setting like this, with no real pass-rush and no physical coverage, there in theory should be an advantage to the quarterback.
Manziel went 7-for-13 and had three passes knocked down at the line. He was 4-for-9 in 11-on-11. Josh McCown went 9-for-11 for the day.
Roster moves: LB Darius Eubanks (knee), WR Marlon Moore (illness) and RB Glenn Winston (knee) did not practice after being placed on the non-football injury list. All will be back when they are ready. Also not practicing was DB Charles Gaines (hamstring).
Camp tidbit: The Cleveland Browns report that training camp has been held at five sites, including 21 times at the team's facility in Berea. Previous sites include Bowling Green State University, Hiram College, Kent State and Lakeland Community College.
From a coach: "I think in a lot of ways it was a typical first day. I saw a lot of good things out there -- most importantly, the focus, the effort and the energy. This is a shock to the system. I told them that afterwards. Our recovery from here is very important and to take care of themselves these next couple hours. No matter how hard you train over the summer, there is no way to replicate this. I thought our guys handled it well." -- Mike Pettine.
From a player: "I wake up every day blessed. I say my prayers to God and I think about my son. At the end of the day, I know if I have those two beliefs and love, I can do anything I want. It's just going to be the extra work and the effort and really pushing forward. I think we can all attain our goals, but it's the effort and how we go about that task." -- Terrell Pryor.
Worth mentioning: First-round pick Danny Shelton promised he would buy his mother a house if he got to the NFL. He did just that after signing his contract, and he bought her and the family a six-bedroom abode in his home state of Washington. "It was great to finally check that off my bucket list," Shelton said.
Today: The Browns return to the practice field in Berea for another workout in shells at 9:30 a.m.
