Roster prediction: Tramon Williams completes corner group

Continuing a very preliminary look at how the Cleveland Browns' roster might shake out come September, with a comparison to last season's numbers after the final cutdown out of preseason.

Cornerback

Book ‘em: Joe Haden, Tramon Williams, K’Waun Williams, Justin Gilbert, Pierre Desir.

Left to ponder: Charles Gaines.

Last year/this year: The Browns kept six last season; they’ll keep five this year.

Can the Browns get by with five corners? Yes, given the quality at the position. One year ago, Aaron Berry was the sixth corner, and he didn’t even make it to the season opener.

This is a solid group, so solid it’s tough to find a roster spot for Gaines, a draft pick.

The key to the group: Williams proving the Packers made a mistake letting him go at age 32. If Williams can play, he starts along with Haden and the rest of the group falls into place.

K’waun Williams, Gilbert and Desir compete for the nickel spot. The two who don’t play nickel will get plenty of time.

There is reason for optimism. Haden is one of the league’s best. Coach Mike Pettine said K’Waun Williams really emerged in the offseason. Gilbert seemed to have his act together, and in the one offseason interview he did he seemed like a different guy. Desir was consistently impressive with the opportunities he was given.

Barring injury, this should be a strong group.

They’ll keep: Haden, Williams, Williams, Gilbert, Desir (5).

Previously: Quarterback, Running back, Fullback, Wide receiver,Tight end, Offensive line, Defensive line, Linebacker.
