Cubs face quick turnaround in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI -- Even the late Ernie Banks, whose smiling face adorns the cover of the Cubs media guide, might be cowed by days like Wednesday.

Banks, famous for his "Let's play two" outlook on baseball, rarely -- if ever -- faced the prospect of finishing three games in one calendar day. He might've played tripleheaders in his Negro League days, but once he reached Chicago, where the Cubs played only day games at home during his career, he most likely never had to worry about one game ending after midnight of the same day his team was due to play two.

That's what the Cubs and Reds were looking at on Wednesday after Tuesday's game went 13 innings, not ending until 12:02 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) in a dramatic, 5-4 Chicago win. The two teams returned to Great American Ball Park on Wednesday for a day-night doubleheader created by the postponement due to rain of their game on April 25. The first game started at 11:35 a.m. (Central Daylight Time) with the second due to start at 5:10 p.m.

What might've been more alarming for Cubs manager Joe Maddon was his bullpen situation. After using four relievers in Monday's 5-4 loss, he was forced to use six on Tuesday-Wednesday, including left-hander Travis Wood and right-hander Justin Grimm in both games.

"I didn't want to have to pitch Grimm at all, but I had to," Maddon said. "I didn't want to use (Hector) Rondon for two innings or (Jason) Motte for two innings, but I had to. Those are the things you have to do to play in October."

Part of the problem was starting pitcher Jason Hammel lasted only five innings while dealing with the aftereffects of the tight left hamstring that forced him out of his previous start on July 8. Still, Maddon was able to stay away from right-handers Rafael Soriano and Neil Ramirez.

"We're not as bad as it seems," Maddon said. "I'm proud of the guys."

FRESH ARM: That being said, the Cubs made a move before Wednesday's game to shore up the bullpen, designating LHP Clayton Richard for assignment and recalling RHP Yoervis Medina from Triple-A Iowa.

Medina, 26, is in his second stint with Chicago. He pitched five scoreless innings with three strikeouts in three relief appearances with the Cubs from June 17 through June 26.

Richard, acquired from Pittsburgh on July 3 for cash, was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three appearances, including two starts, with the Cubs.

The Cubs also added RHP Dallas Beeler to the roster as the 26th man allowed by Major League Baseball for doubleheaders. He is the scheduled starter for the second game.

REMEMBER THESE GUYS?: Kyle Schwarber is rewriting the Cubs' record books. On Tuesday, the rookie catcher became the first Cub to hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and a game-winner in extra innings since Andre Dawson on May 8, 1990, against Atlanta. He also is the sixth Chicago player and first rookie in franchise history to hit two homers in the ninth inning or later, joining Dawson, Ron Santo, Dave Kingman, Ryne Sandberg and Sammy Sosa. Kingman is the only other player to do so on the road. Schwarber, Dawson and Kingman are the only players to hit game-tying homers in the ninth inning and game-winners in extras.
