Report: Bills hosting free-agent DE Kroy Biermann

The Buffalo Bills are hosting free-agent defensive end Kroy Biermann on a visit Monday, according to a report by NFL.com.

Biermann, 30, has played his entire eight-year career with the Atlanta Falcons and has seen his role change several times. The Falcons used Biermann as a situational pass-rusher in Dan Quinn's 4-3 scheme last season, but he started 15 games as a stand-up outside linebacker in Mike Nolan's 3-4 system in 2014. Biermann began his career as a rotational 4-3 defensive end during Brian VanGorder's stint as defensive coordinator in Atlanta.

Rex Ryan is expected to run more 3-4 fronts next season, meaning Biermann would project as an outside linebacker if he signs in Buffalo. At 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds, Biermann has close to the ideal size and length for the position. He would likely slide into a reserve role behind Jerry Hughes and Manny Lawson, potentially jumping ahead of Randell Johnson and IK Enemkpali on the depth chart.

Biermann has never recorded more than five sacks in any season and offers limited upside as a pass-rusher at this point in his career, but Pro Football Focus ranked him as seventh best among NFL edge defenders in run defense last season.

With about $7.4 million in cap space as of Monday morning, the Bills' goal with Biermann would likely be to have him agree to a one-year, minimum-salary deal.
