The details of the new contract for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco have been revealed, and here are three points that stand out:
Joe Flacco's cap number went from being the third-highest in the NFL ($28.55 million) to the seventh-highest ($22.55 million). It's the same cap figure as Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Even Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has a higher cap number this season at $23.75 million.
Flacco's cap numbers are relatively flat over the course of his contract, which makes it a legitimate six-year deal this time. His cap number doesn't exceed $28 million (like it did before this week's extension) until 2020. By that time, the cap could reach $195 million, which means Flacco would only account for a manageable 14 percent of Baltimore's cap that year.
This has the potential to only be a five-year deal. There is no proration in the final year of the contract (2021), which means there is no dead money if the Ravens choose to cut Flacco. That's not a given because Flacco would only be 36 at that point. There were four starting quarterbacks 36 or older this season: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Josh McCown. Still, parting ways after the 2020 season is an option based on how the deal is structured.
