OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Nine months after starring in the Super Bowl for Seattle, wide receiver Chris Matthews is now a member of the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad.
Matthews takes the spot left by wide receiver Chuck Jacobs, who was promoted to the Ravens' 53-man roster.
Matthews struggled this season with four catches for 54 yards in nine games with the Seahawks and only one catch since Oct. 5. But he nearly helped Seattle to back-to-back Lombardi trophies in February, when he surprisingly made four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.
It could be an awkward reunion with cornerback Kyle Arrington, who had trouble covering Matthews in that Super Bowl when he was with the Patriots.
Matthews, 26, is intriguing because of his imposing 6-foot-5 frame. The only Ravens receiver over 6-2 is Marlon Brown, who has been phased out of the offense this month.
"I'm sure he's planning and hoping to earn playing time in the near future," coach John Harbaugh said.
To make room for Jacobs on the 53-man roster, the Ravens released veteran receiver Joe Morgan. He lasted 19 days with Baltimore and wasn't active for a game.
"Joe did a good job for us," Harbaugh said. "It just wasn't working in the plans for us, fit-wise."
