Tom Nelson among Ravens' five cuts as they get down to 70 players

The Baltimore Ravens trimmed their roster to 70 players by cutting five on Friday:

  • WR Tom Nelson: The converted safety was the most accomplished player of these cuts. He impressed the coaches with his route running, but he didn't make enough plays as a returner. Nelson has previously played for the Bengals, Eagles, Bears and Panthers.

  • WR Daniel Brown: His preseason ended on a strong note with a blocked punt and touchdown catch in the final minute Thursday. He'll likely be signed to the 10-player practice squad.

  • CB Quinton Pointer: There was a time during training camp when it looked like Pointer was going to make the team. But he disappeared in the past few preseason games, and he fell behind rookie Tray Walker and Cassius Vaughn on the depth chart.

  • OT Blaine Clausell: He received the largest signing bonus of the Ravens' undrafted rookies ($10,000). But he couldn't climb the depth chart or stay healthy.

  • ILB Andrew Bose: He was waived by the Ravens in May before being re-signed by the team after it released Trey DePriest. Bose was in a tough spot because Baltimore is loaded at inside linebacker.

By cutting Nelson and Brown, the Ravens are down to seven receivers on their roster. Baltimore would likely keep rookie sixth-round pick Darren Waller over Jeremy Butler if it only keeps six receivers. The Ravens could stick with seven considering first-round pick Breshad Perriman has been sidelined for over a month with a knee injury.

The Ravens have to get down to 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday.
