OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- No healthy second-round pick has ever been cut by the Baltimore Ravens after two full seasons. That trend isn't about to end, if you read into coach John Harbaugh's comments about linebacker Arthur Brown.
"As hard as he worked in camp, I think he'll really play faster in the regular season because he's so quick and so explosive as a player," Harbaugh said Tuesday. "I expect him to have a really good year."
A disappointing 2013 second-round pick, Brown has been considered to be on the roster bubble after making no tackles in four games played last season. Plus, the Ravens are already expected to carry four inside linebackers in C.J. Mosley, Daryl Smith, Albert McClellan and Zachary Orr.
So, has Brown made the team?
"I can't say right now," Harbaugh said. "Nothing is written in stone."
In the 2013 draft, a few months removed from Ray Lewis' final game, the Ravens traded three picks (ones in the second, fifth and sixth rounds) to move up six spots in the second round to select Brown. While his strength is his athleticism, he has struggled in transitioning to an NFL defense.
After two seasons, Brown has played 18 games and has been inactive in 14. He has recorded 12 tackles, a half sack and one forced fumble. If Brown's spot isn't secure, Thursday's preseason finale in Atlanta could potentially be his last in a Ravens uniform.
"Honestly, I really don't approach the game like with that in mind," Brown said. "I really approach it like any other game as a great opportunity for me to showcase and contribute to this team while I'm still here."
As a rookie, Brown showed flashes when he played on passing downs to utilize his quickness. Last season, Brown was inactive for 12 games because McClellan and Orr became core special teams players. Brown didn't play a defensive snap in 2014.
So, why would the Ravens keep Brown? The Ravens made a strong investment in him, and he could play a big role down the road. Brown might not be a factor on special teams, but he could be the team's top option if Mosley or Smith got hurt.
Harbaugh said he's been impressed with how Brown has played this preseason with the first and second teams.
"Arthur has really come on," Harbaugh said. "He's kind of in a tough spot, sitting behind two really good linebackers. Daryl Smith is the most underrated linebacker in football, without question. I'll stand on that all day long. C.J. Mosley is one of the best young linebackers in football, if not the best young linebacker in football."
Brown is part of a strange 2013 draft class for the Ravens. The top two picks (safety Matt Elam and Brown) have struggled, and three other selections are already gone. But this class has produced three starters in nose tackle Brandon William (third round), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (fourth round) and right tackle Rick Wagner (fifth round).
For Brown, he has another shot Thursday to show that he belongs on the Ravens.
"I know one thing, he's certainly good enough to be on our team and contribute for us," Harbaugh said.
