Baltimore Ravens offseason roster review: Maxx Williams leads young TE group

This is the third part of the offseason series that is focusing on the Baltimore Ravens' position groups as they begin organized team activities this week. This post will look at the Ravens' tight ends.

Returning: Dennis Pitta (pictured, and he hasn't committed to playing this season), Crockett Gillmore, Allen Reisner (practice squad), Konrad Reuland (practice squad)

Newcomers: Maxx Williams* (second round), Nick Boyle (fifth round)

Departures: Owen Daniels (free agent, signed with Broncos), Phillip Supernaw (cut)

Roster spots likely available: Three or four

Competition: There really isn't one among the tight ends. Boyle will likely battle other players for one of the final roster spots determined by special teams play, but he should make the team. The biggest question mark remains Pitta, who has played a total of seven games the past two seasons because of hip surgeries. He is participating in offseason workouts, and is expected to make a determination this summer on whether he's going to play. It would be a bonus if Pitta returns. He was hitting the prime of his career before his hip problems. The Ravens prepared themselves for moving forward when they drafted Williams and Boyle this year.

Outlook: The Ravens went from having one of the most experienced tight end combinations to one of the youngest tight end groups in a span of a year. At this point last year, Baltimore entered OTAs with Pitta and Daniels, both of whom combined for over 500 career catches. If Pitta chooses not to play this season, the Ravens would have three tight ends (Williams, Gillmore and Boyle) who have totaled 10 NFL receptions. The key is Williams, the first tight end drafted this year. He is a playmaking tight end who has the potential to stretch the field more than Pitta ever did. Williams ranked third among college football tight ends last season with an average of 15.8 yards per catch. Gillmore is more of a run blocker but he improved last season as a receiver. There's a chance he could catch between 20 to 25 passes this season.
