The Baltimore Ravens announced they will terminate the contract of reserve nose tackle Terrence Cody after the Super Bowl.
It's a peculiar move because Cody was nearing the end of a one-year deal and was going to be an unrestricted free agent on March 10.
Cody, 26, is a 2010 second-round pick who was expected to be the team's long-term replacement for Kelly Gregg, but that never panned out. In 2014, he was on the physically unable to perform list for nine weeks after undergoing hip surgery. Cody only played one game this season after being activated.
His best season came in 2011 when he started all 16 games. But he was beaten out by Ma'ake Kemoeatu in the 2012 Super Bowl season and never got back into the starting lineup on a regular basis.
The Ravens re-signed Cody to one-year deal worth the veteran minimum on April 4. Then, a month later, he had hip surgery for a second straight season and didn't make an impact on last year's team.
Defensive line is one of the Ravens' deepest positions, and Brandon Williams excelled in his first season as the team's starting nose tackle.
With the release of Cody, the Ravens only have one player under contract from the 2010 draft -- tight end Dennis Pitta. Their first pick in the 2010 draft was linebacker Sergio Kindle, who fractured his skull before his first training camp and played a total of three games for the Ravens.
