TEMPE, Ariz. -- With the Arizona Cardinals starters resting for Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Denver Broncos, the door has been opened for a slew of back-ups and third-stringers to prove their worth -- either to Arizona or to another team.
Call it their last audition.
Here are five players who have a lot of to gain Thursday night:
Cariel Brooks, CB: With the starting right-cornerback job still not set in stone, Brooks could make a run at it with a solid and impressive performance against Denver. Starting may be a long shot for the second-year undrafted free agent, but Arizona needs depth with a slew of injuries at the position.
Matt Barkley, QB: The odds aren’t in Barkley’s favor to make the Cardinals’ 53-man roster since both Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton are healthy, but if Barkley continues to show improvement Thursday night, he could make a case to be another team’s backup. The fragility of the position was on display this week when Minnesota quarterback Teddy Bridgewater went down, so GMs will have their antennas up for the next quarterback who can make their roster.
Antoine McClain, G: Consistency is key for McClain to make the Cardinals roster, although his competition is stiff at guard with Earl Watford's versatility a major storyline of training camp. McClain has the talent level but he needs to continue playing at that level for an entire game.
Lamar Louis, ILB: Louis could be the dark-horse pick to make the 53-man roster because of an impressive showing on special teams during training camp. But he’ll have to prove he has a command of the defense in case he’s called upon. Being a good special-teamer can give him the upper hand, but his primary job is as an inside linebacker.
Chris Hubert, WR: Hubert fits the mold for the type of small, speedy receiver coach Bruce Arians likes, but how many does he need? He already has John Brown and J.J. Nelson on the roster, and Hubert won’t be taking either of their places anytime soon. If Hubert can have a big game and return a kick or a punt to the house, he may make it tough to let him go.
