GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Sarah Thomas was "solid" in her debut as the NFL’s first full-time female official during Saturday night’s preseason game between Arizona and Kansas City.
Arians challenged one of Thomas' calls late in the first quarter. She initially ruled a 10-yard pass from Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith to wide receiver Frankie Hammond complete, but Arians challenged the call, believing the ball came out of Hammond’s possession.
“She got chewed out pretty good a few times,” Arians said Monday.
He won the challenge and the pass was ruled incomplete.
“Obviously, she didn’t see that ball come loose like I saw because it was in front of her,” Arians said. “She didn’t have that angle, but I thought she did a quality job.”
Arians, who’s known for letting officials know exactly how he feels during games, was seen on TV sharing his thoughts on certain plays with Thomas. He didn’t clean up his language just because Thomas was a woman.
“She had a striped shirt on,” he said. “There’s no male-female, it’s just striped shirts.”
