No. 24 California women hold off Washington 69-60
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Kristine Anigwe totaled 26 points and 10 rebounds and Penina Davidson added 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting with nine boards to help the No. 24 California women hold off Washington 69-60 on Friday night.
Anigwe and Davidson combined to make 20 of 28 shots from the floor (71 percent), but the rest of the Golden Bears shot just 23.5 percent (8 of 34). Asha Thomas added 14 points and eight assists, while Mikayla Cowling scored two points on 1-of-7 shooting but added 11 assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Amber Melgoza led the Huskies (6-10, 0-5) with 15 points and six assists, but she made just 5 of 18 shots from the floor as Washington connected on 21 of 61 attempts (34 percent). Hannah Johnson and Mai-Loni Henson each scored 13 with Johnson adding 11 rebounds. The Huskies are still looking for their first Pac-12 win under new coach Jody Wynn.
The Huskies trailed by two at halftime, but took a 32-31 lead at the start of the third period on a Johnson 3-pointer. Jenna Moser's 3 stretched UW's lead to 37-33, but Davidson scored five in an 11-0 run to give Cal a 44-37 lead midway through the period. The Golden Bears led 48-40 before back-to-back 3s from Johnson and Henson and two free throws by Melgoza knotted the score. Cowling's jumper gave Cal a 50-48 lead heading into the final period.
Davidson scored four straight to open the final quarter and Washington got no closer than four from there.
Cal had a 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.
