Memphis upends No. 23 Rutgers in overtime
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Ariel Hearn scored 18 points Tuesday night and Asianna Fuqua-Bey sank two key free throws in overtime as Memphis rallied to upset No. 23 Rutgers 74-73.
Pa'Sonna Hope scored 16 and grabbed 10 rebounds, Breigha Wilder-Cochran scored 12, and Fuqua-Bey finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Rutgers (13-3, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) led 36-27 at halftime, but Memphis (9-8, 2-3) rallied to take a 63-62 second-half lead at 1:59 on a free throw by Hope. Betnijah Laney's jumper tied it at 66 at the end of regulation.
Kahleah Copper answered a layup by Hearn with one of her own and Rutgers led 73-70 at 1:04 in OT, but Wilder-Cochran sank two free throws to make it a one-point game. Christa Evans was called for a foul with 9 seconds left, and Fuqua-Bey made two free throws for the win.
Copper finished with 23, Tyler Scaife 21 and Laney 15.
Rutgers, which entered the top 25 for the first time this season Monday, will host No. 1 UConn on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights were done in by 24 turnovers despite shooting 55 percent from the field. It also didn't help that they didn't get a point from their reserves.
