News: 18 hours agoRichardson will start Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Spin: Per Boyd, Richardson will start off the first half of the contest, while fellow QB Riley Leonard will start the second half. Then in the team's second preseason tilt, Aug. 22 against the Falcons, that arrangement will be reversed. The two signal callers remain in contention to serve as Daniel Jones' top backup this coming season, and will have their chance to make their cases for slotting on that front in the coming weeks, with Jones not slated to play in the preseason.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Richardson enters his fourth NFL season currently as a backup to Daniel Jones, but still a candidate to be traded. Last season, Richardson played just 14 snaps off the bench and missed most of the season with an eye injury. If ever called on to start, Richardson will be an interesting fantasy wild card. On one hand, the 2023 fourth-overall pick has a ton of upside; he ranked no lower than sixth among QBs in carries, rushing yards and rush TDs in 2024 despite only playing 10 full games, while also pacing the position in average depth of throw and yards per completion. That led to four 20-plus fantasy point games. On the other hand, Richardson's poor passing may lead to many duds. He had fewer than 15 fantasy points in his other six outings, threw 12 INTs on the season (fourth most) and his 48% completion percentage ranked last. In total, he averaged 15.8 fantasy PPG in the 10 games, which would've ranked 15th over the full season. Richardson's elite rushing ability and aggressive passing style are the only reason to keep him stashed in deep dynasty leagues.
