Furman gets first 6-0 start with 74-57 win
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Matt Rafferty scored 18 points and Furman is off to its first 6-0 start in school history after beating Division II Southern Wesleyan 74-57 on Wednesday night for its 13th win in the last 14 games.
Clay Mounce scored 13 points and Tre Clark added 10 for the Paladins (6-0), who shocked eighth-ranked Villanova last Saturday in a 76-68 overtime win.
The Paladins shot 51 percent and outscored the Warriors 44-18 in the paint.
Rafferty's free throw with 4:23 left in the first half put the Paladins up for good, 31-30, and they finished on a 12-2 run for a 42-32 halftime lead behind his 18 points. Furman shot 61 percent in the half.
Mounce had back-to-back 3s and a dunk to open the second half and Furman pulled away on a 17-5 run and led by as many as 22.
Lamont Smith scored 17 and Jalen Lowery 12 for Southern Wesleyan.
