Elon survives against Florida International 84-81 in OT
ELON, N.C. -- Brian Dawkins scored 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting and Elon outlasted Florida International 84-81 in overtime on Wednesday night.
After an Eric Nottage 3-pointer for Florida International sent the game into overtime, the Phoenix (6-1) responded by trailing only once in the extra period.
Two Michael Douglas free throws briefly gave the Panthers (3-5) a 73-72 lead with 2:52 to go. But Dawkins made a layup off an assist by Steven Santa Ana and Tyler Seibring hit two at the line one possession later to give Elon a three point cushion.
Florida International managed to cut its deficit to one on two more occasions, but a pair of Santa Ana free throws with two seconds left finally put the Panthers away.
Seibring finished with 16 points and Santa Ana had 13 for the Phoenix.
Donte McGill scored a game-high 27 for Florida International.
