Sherburne scores 28 points; UMBC beats Mount St. Mary's
EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Joe Sherburne scored a career-high 28 points and UMBC beat Mount St. Mary's 78-70 on Wednesday night.
Sherburne shot 9 of 12 from the field and made all six 3-point attempts and all four shots from the line. Jairus Lyles added 24 points for the Retrievers (7-1), who have won three straight since their lone loss, 78-66 against Navy on Nov. 23.
Elijah Long had 17 points to lead Mount St. Mary's (1-9). Mawdo Sallah added 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Mountaineers had a one-point lead at halftime. UMBC opened the second half on a 24-5 run and led 52-34 with about 12 minutes left. Sherburne scored 12 points on four 3-pointers and Lyles had six points during the stretch. Mount St. Mary's pulled to 76-70 with 16 seconds left but didn't get closer.
