Eleby, Peterson lead VMI past D-III Southern Virginia, 78-47
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Julian Eleby scored 18 points, QJ Peterson added 17 and VMI beat Division III Southern Virginia 78-47 on Tuesday night.
Eleby and Peterson hit four 3-pointers apiece and Peterson moved past Ramon Williams into ninth on VMI's career scoring list.
Eleby hit three 3s and scored 11 points during an 18-2 run that made it 30-16 with 3:57 left in the first half and the Keydets (1-1) led by double figures the rest of the way. Two free throws by Garrett Gilkeson gave VMI its biggest lead at 74-44 with 3:16 to play.
Rashay Douglas led the Knights with 16 points.
VMI converted 19 Southern Virginia turnovers into 23 points and outscored the Knights 40-18 in the paint.
Southern Virginia made just 17 of 49 (34.7 percent) from the field, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range.
