Top-seeded Akron holds off Eastern Michigan in MAC opener
CLEVELAND -- Isaiah Johnson made a layup with 25.5 seconds left as top-seeded Akron rallied in the second half to beat Eastern Michigan 65-63 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Thursday.
The Zips (25-7) trailed by 12 with 8:46 left before finally finding their range behind the 3-point line to hold off the eighth-seeded Eagles (18-15). They will face 12th-seeded Bowling Green in the semifinals on Friday.
Raven Lee made two free throws to put Eastern Michigan up 63-62 before the Zips went inside to Johnson, who finished with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Lee was bumped while missing a layup with nine seconds left but didn't get the call and Akron's Josh Williams missed a breakaway with three seconds left.
Eastern Michigan was assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout it didn't have and Tim Bond made a free throw for Akron.
Reggie McAdams led Akron with 20 points. The Zips went 9 of 33 on 3-pointers.
Lee led the Eagles with 23 points.
