Holy Cross wins tournament opener, beats Loyola (Md.) 72-67
BALTIMORE -- Anthony Thompson got his only points of the night when he nailed a 3-point jumper with 10 seconds left to give Holy Cross a 72-67 win over Loyola (Maryland) in the first round of the Patriot League's tournament on Tuesday night.
Holy Cross will face regular-season champion Bucknell on Thursday.
Loyola's Matt Staubi hit a 3 to tie at 67 with 53 seconds left. Thompson answered with his trey and Matt Husek made two free throws to seal the victory.
Malachi Alexander hit four treys to finish with 24 points and Karl Charles was 7 of 10 from the floor for a career-high 23 points for Holy Cross (11-19).
Loyola (9-21) made 71 percent of its shots in the first half but cooled to just hitting 7 of 23 in the second period. Holy Cross hit 17 of 32 in the first period.
Eric Laster led Loyola with 17 points.
