CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Rhett Harrelson scored 19 points and Western Carolina beat Samford 76-71 on Saturday.
Harrelson was 5 of 6 from the floor -- all 3-pointers -- for the Catamounts (11-15, 6-7 Southern). Torrion Brummitt scored 16 points and Mike Brown added 14 points with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Western Carolina trailed by one with 8:10 to go, but Harrelson and Justin Browning hit back-to-back 3-pointers to go up by five, 57-52.
Samford got it back to one with 2:04 left on Darius Jones-Gibson's layup, but Western Carolina made eight straight free throws to hold on.
Samford (12-16, 3-12 Southern) was led by Christen Cunningham with a career-high 27 points. Cunningham was 7 of 15 from the floor and sank all 13 free-throw attempts. He had tied his previous high of 26 on Thursday against East Tennessee. Jones-Gibson finished with 19 points.
