VCU stays atop A10 with 69-65 win over George Washington
WASHINGTON -- Jonathan Williams had 17 points Saturday and VCU held off a late charge to beat George Washington 69-65.
Justin Tillman's pair of free throws with 2.0 seconds left clinched it and the Rams (21-8, 13-3) maintained first place in the Atlantic 10. Jordan Burgess added 14 points, Mo Alie-Cox scored 11 and Melvin Johnson 10.
Patricio Garino had a couple chances while George Washington (21-8, 10-6) trailed by two in the final 11 seconds. His 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim, and then Alex Mitola fed the long rebound back to Garino, who drove the lane but missed a runner short off the glass.
George Washington had a 12-4 run to lead 63-62 with 1:30 left -- the Colonials' first lead in 24 minutes. It lasted 31 seconds until VCU took the lead for good on Burgess' corner 3.
