Cal Poly pulls away late to beat D-II CS Monterey Bay 71-62
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Joel Awich scored 17 points and made a key 3-pointer to help Cal Poly beat Division II Cal State Monterey Bay 71-62 on Wednesday night.
Awich made two 3-pointers on 7-of-14 shooting. David Nwaba had 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists to lead Cal Poly (1-2). Jaylen Shead added 13 points and Zach Gordon chipped in 6 points with ten rebounds.
Marquise Washington scored 11 points, and Gregg Poloksky and Alex Fertig added 10 apiece for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Julien Ducree made a layup then forced a turnover, and Washington made a jumper to tie it at 57. Gordon dunked and Nwaba scored 4 points to give the Mustangs a 63-57 lead.
Patrick Lefiti made a 3-pointer and Mateo Jones a layup to pull the Otters to 63-62 with 2:26 left. Ridge Shipley made a pair of free throws, Awich hit a 3-pointer, and the Mustangs pulled away.
