Young gives Irvine 72-70 win over Green Bay for title
LAS VEGAS -- Alex Young scored six of his 18 points in the final minute, including the game-winning basket with 1.7 seconds left, to give UC-Irvine a 72-70 win over Green Bay on Monday for the championship of the Holiday Hoops Classic.
Young, the tournament MVP, hit a pullup jumper from about 10 feet on the right wing for the win after Keifer Sykes drilled a contested 3-pointer with 18.5 seconds to tie the game.
The Anteaters (6-5), who led 39-33 at the half and never trailed in the second half, got 16 points from Will Davis II and 12 from Jaron Martin.
Sykes led the Phoenix (9-3) with 22 points, Carrington Love added 16 and Greg Mays 14.
Young made two free throws with 43 seconds left for a 68-66 lead. Sykes made 1 of 2 at 28.2 seconds. Young again made two with 25 seconds before Sykes tied it.
Sykes missed a long heave at the buzzer.
