GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Jamel Waters had 17 points, nine assists and three steals as Alabama State beat Mississippi Valley State 88-76 on Monday night.
DeMarcus Robinson scored 15 points and had seven assists, Maurice Strong was 6 of 10 from the floor for 14 points and Bobby Brown chipped in 10 points for Alabama State (8-5, 4-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference).
The Hornets held a 37-30 halftime lead but broke to a 52-36 advantage early in the second period and rolled to an 88-71 advantage with 2:44 remaining in the game.
Alabama State shot 57.6 percent from the field in the second half to go 35 of 68 (51.5 percent) for the game. MVSU made just 9 of 23 field goal attempts in the first half.
Jeffrey Simmons had 20 points, Latrell Love added 18 and Rakwan Kelly chipped in 10 for MVSU (2-14, 1-2).
