Peel's double-double leads CCSU over UMBC 65-53
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Brandon Peel scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Central Connecticut State over Maryland-Baltimore County 65-53 on Wednesday night.
Down 37-36 with 13:28 to play, Khalen Cumberlander drained a 3-pointer sparking a 16-6 run to give CCSU a 52-43 lead with 5:14 left. Cody Joyce and Wayne Sparrow both scored to pull UMBC within 52-47. The Blue Devils closed on a 13-6 run to seal it.
Peel was 7 of 11 from the field, had three steals and his second straight double-double. Faronte Drakeford and Matt Mobley each added 16 points, and Cumberlander chipped in 11 points for CCSU (2-7).
Sparrow scored 17 points, Joyce had 13 and Will Darley added 11 for UMBC (0-9). Jourdan Grant dished out five assists for the Retrievers, who are winless and have lost by double digits in all but one game.
