Pepperdine beats Santa Clara 64-55
MALIBU, Calif. -- Jett Raines scored 19 points and Pepperdine clinched its first winning season since 2004-05 with a 64-55 victory over Santa Clara on Thursday night.
The Waves (16-11, 9-7 West Coast Conference) received offense off their bench from Shawn Olden (16) and Lamond Murray Jr. (15).
Jared Brownridge scored 18 points and Denzel Johnson 13 for the Broncos (11-16, 5-10), who have lost six straight. Their last victory came at home over Pepperdine on Jan. 24.
A 9-2 run gave Pepperdine its largest lead of the night -- 13 points -- with 1:52 remaining. The Broncos cut it to eight with 38 seconds left before the Waves made three free throws.
A basket by Murray and six straight points from Olden gave the Waves a 23-15 lead with 14:18 left in the first half, and they wouldn't trail again.
Pepperdine, fifth nationally in 3-point defense, held Santa Clara to 2-of-18 from the arc.
