Manhattan uses early surge to beat Marist 70-59
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Michael Alvarado scored 18 points and George Beamon added 12 with 10 rebounds as Manhattan defeated Marist 70-59 Friday night.
The Jaspers (5-2, 1-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) broke an early six-all tie with a 13-0 run fueled by 3-pointers from RaShawn Stores and Shane Richards, coasting to a 37-26 lead at halftime. They opened the second half with a 9-0 surge sparked by Alvarado with a three-point play to grab their largest lead of 20.
Marist (0-9, 0-2) crawled back to cut the deficit to six on a pair of Chavaughn Lewis free throws, but couldn't pull closer as Manhattan sank eight of their last 10 from the foul line.
Alvarado was 4 of 8 from the field and hit 10 of his 12 free throws. Rhamel Brown had 12 points and six rebounds for the Jaspers.
Lewis paced the Red Foxes with 23 points on 7-of-17 shooting.
