Lehigh defeats UMBC 70-68
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Tim Kempton scored 13 points as Lehigh narrowly defeated UMBC 70-68 in a back-and-forth battle Saturday.
Kempton had eight rebounds and two steals for the Mountain Hawks (5-5). Mackey McNight, Shane Whitfield and Austin Price finished the game with 11 points each and Corey Schaefer had 10.
The lead changed 10 times during the game.
Both teams were cold in the first period, with UMBC hitting 30 percent from the field and Lehigh hitting 37 percent.
In the second, the Mountain Hawks upped their team percentages to 52 from the field, 69 from the line, and 60 from 3-point territory.
With UMBC down by six with 40 seconds to play, Chase Plummer and Quentin Jones hit 3-pointers each to close the gap. But Kempton and Schaefer combined for five free throws to help keep Lehigh on top.
Plummer led the Retrievers (3-7) with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds.
