Houston rally beats Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 78-67
HOUSTON -- TaShawn Thomas had 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting to help Houston rally for a 78-67 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night.
Jherrod Stiggers had 13 points and 5 rebounds, Danrad Knowles added 13 points and 5 rebounds on 4 of 5 shooting, L.J. Rose scored 13 points and 5 assists and Tione Womack scored 10 points with 6 assists for the Cougars (6-2), who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Houston had 16 assists as a team and shot 49 percent, including nearly 57 percent in the second half.
Jeff Beverley had 20 points and 5 rebounds, and John Jordan had 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for TAMU-CC (3-6), which fell for the fourth straight game.
Joy Williamson added 18 points off the bench on 5 of 6 shooting for the Islanders, who shot 46 percent but struggled in the second half, hitting just under 43 percent.
The Cougars opened up a 56-50 lead on two Knowles free throws with 9 minutes remaining, capping a 13-5 spurt for Houston. Knowles led the Cougars with four points in the run.
Houston's lead grew from there, hitting double-digits at 63-53 with 6:41 remaining on back-to-back dunks by Thomas and Knowles.
The Islanders would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went back and forth over the first six-and-a-half minutes of the second half, with the Islanders holding a 45-43 lead with 13:37 remaining on a Beverley layup.
The Islanders used a 13-2 run over a four-and-a-half minute stretch of the first half to turn a four-point deficit into a seven-point lead.
After Womack hit a jumper with 10:11 remaining in the first half to give the Cougars a 16-12 lead, Joy Williamson hit a jumper to spark the run. Jordan put the Islanders up 25-18 with 5:45 left in the half with a jump shot and had four points during the stretch, which saw five Texas A&M- Corpus Christi players score.
Houston closed the half outscoring the Islanders 9-4, capped by two Brandon Morris free throws to trail 31-29 at halftime.
