App State Mountaineers @ Cincinnati Bearcats
Balanced scoring produces 77-49 Cincinnati win
CINCINNATI -- Freshman Troy Caupain came off the bench to score 13 points as the Cincinnati Bearcats rolled to a 77-49 win over Appalachian State on Saturday.
Before a crowd of 6,194 at half-filled Fifth Third Arena (13,176), Titus Rubles also scored 13 points while Sean Kilpatrick added 12 and Jermaine Sanders and Shaquille Thomas finished with 10 each for Cincinnati (3-0). The Bearcats led the Mountaineers by as many as 28 points while holding them to a season-low in points.
Kilpatrick needs one point to become the 13th player in Cincinnati history to score 1,500 or more points in his career.
Tevin Baskin and Mike Kobani each scored 11 points to lead Appalachian State, which fell to 0-3 for the first time since the 1977-1978 season, in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The third of Cincinnati's seven consecutive home games to open the season also was part of the Global Sports Shootout. The Bearcats are scheduled to meet Campbell on Wednesday. Appalachian State returns home to play Lees-McRae on Tuesday.
Cincinnati never trailed after opening the game with a 9-0 run. Appalachian State didn't score until Justin Jackson was whistled for goaltending on Mike Neal's layup with 15:45 left in the first half. The Mountaineers didn't get a ball through the net until Tevin Baskin's layup 40 seconds later. Appalachian State cut the lead to 13-11 on Tommy Spagnolo's 3-pointer with 12:02 left in the half, but the Bearcats took command with a 14-0 run and led by as many as 21 before settling for a 40-21 halftime lead.
Rubles, who scored a career-high 14 points in Cincinnati's 68-57 win over North Carolina State on Tuesday, had 11 of his points on Saturday by halftime.
