UAB edges past Rutgers 79-76
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- C.J. Washington scored a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds, leading three teammates into double-doubles as UAB staved off Rutgers 79-76 on Monday night.
Fahro Alihodzic snapped a 69-69 tie with 2:50 to play, and UAB (1-1) sealed the win making 4 of 6 free throws in the final 35 seconds -- three by Rod Rucker.
Rucker added 15 points and 12 boards for the Blazers. Alihodzic added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Chad Frazier contributed 14 points. UAB outrebounded Rutgers 54-27.
Myles Mack and J.J. Moore scored 12 points apiece for the Scarlet Knights -- Mack with nine assists. Mack hit a 3-pointer to get Rutgers (1-1) ahead early, and the Knights led 37-31 at the half. UAB clawed back into a tie at 56-56 on an Alihodzic jumper with 10:40 to play, and the game was tight until his jumper broke the tie at 69.
