BEAUMONT, Texas -- Joel Wright scored 27 points, Deonte Jones added 19 and Texas State snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 74-61 victory over BracketBusters foe Lamar.
Matt Staff had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats (8-19), who never trailed after the opening minutes. Texas State led 39-29 at halftime and by as many as 20 in the second half before a late Lamar rally.
Amos Wilson scored 19 points, and Stan Brown had 16 points and 14 rebounds, for the Cardinals (3-24), who lost their fourth in a row. Lamar shot 36 percent from the field, shot only three 3-pointers and missed them all, and was outscored 38-22 in the paint.
The teams are formal rivals in the Lone Star Conference, from 1951 to 1963, and the Southland Conference, from 1998 through last season. Lamar still leads the all-time series between the schools, 29-26.
