BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Darren White scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half as Campbell won its season opener Friday night by defeating Averett 74-55.
White, who made 11 of 18 field goals and 9 of 12 free throws, also had seven rebounds and three steals. Playing only 26 minutes, he finished two points shy of his career-high of 33.
After Averett took a 5-0 lead, the Camels scored 19 unanswered points, with Darian Hooker coming off the bench to score 10 of his 12 first-half points during the run. Hooker finished with 15 points and Trey Freeman added 10 while Marvelle Harris pulled down 10 rebounds.
Campbell led 35-15 at halftime and by as many as 36 after White's jump shot made it 70-34 with 5:44 remaining.
Grant Chandler scored 14 points, hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers, to lead the Division III Cougars, who counted the game as an exhibition.
