Appalachian St. 75, NC Greensboro 70

BOONE, N.C. (AP) -- D.J. Thompson scored 29 points and became

Appalachian State's 27th player to reach 1,000 as he led the

Mountaineers to a 75-70 win over UNC-Greensboro in the teams'

regular-season finale Thursday.

Thompson hit his milestone on a three-pointer midway through the

first half, finishing the evening with 1,022 points to stand in

27th place on the all-time scoring list for Appalachian State

(12-15, 6-8 Southern Conference).

Jeremy Clayton added 14 points for Appalachian State.

Ricky Hickman and Kyle Hines each had 23 points to lead the

Spartans (11-17, 4-9).

The Mountaineers led 37-34 at the half, then spread it to as

many as 14 points in the second half. But they didn't score from

the field over the final 5:24 and their advantage slipped to as

little as one point on two occasions in the game's final minute.
