Associate head coach Corey Myers resigns from Auburn softball staff

It's been a strange week for Auburn softball.

Associate head coach Corey Myers, the 36-year-old son of head coach Clint Myers, announced Thursday night that he was resigning from the staff, effective immediately.

"It is with great sadness today that I announce that I will be stepping down as associate head coach of the Auburn University softball team," Corey Myers said in a statement. "It became clear to me that my relationship with my family needs to be my top priority right now and therefore felt that I must step away. I thank the Auburn family for everything they have done for my family and myself. We absolutely love living on the plains and will forever feel like Auburn is our home."

Myers joined the Auburn staff in 2013. In 1999, he was taken fourth overall in the MLB draft, going to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He spent nine years in the minors.

On Monday night, the Tigers made national headlines after shortstop Haley Fagan was involved in an incident with Florida coach Tim Walton in the postgame handshake line. Walton appeared to bump Fagan, who did not have her hand extended, with his forearm. Fagan then shoved Walton in the back before the two exchanged heated words.

Walton has apologized for the incident.

Auburn, the national runner-up a year ago, was set to open a key SEC series against Georgia on Friday night. The Tigers are 28-5 this season and were ranked seventh in the most recent ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
