How many bowlers have taken three wickets in their first over in a Test like Ollie Robinson did?

KL Rahul was out for 100 against Afghanistan - the third time running he's reached the century and got out straight away. Has anyone else done this? And what's the highest score someone has made three times in Tests? asked Raju Parekh from India
You're right that KL Rahul's last three three-figure scores in Tests have been 100 (against Afghanistan in Mullanpur at the weekend), 100 (vs West Indies in Ahmedabad last October), and 100 (vs England at Lord's in July 2025).

The England opener Len Hutton is the only man to be dismissed for exactly 100 in a Test on four occasions; Rahul has joined Graeme Wood with three. Another Australian, Steve Waugh, made three scores of 100 in Tests, one of them a not-out. Hutton and Wood both had successive three-figure dismissals for 100; Allan Lamb and Mushtaq Mohammad also made successive three-figure scores of 100, one of them being not out.

The highest score made by one batter three times in Tests is 158, by Kevin Pietersen for England. Steven Smith has made 138 four times (one a not-out), while Virat Kohli has five 103s, one of them not out.

Ollie Robinson took three wickets in his first over at Lord's last week. How many other bowlers have taken three in their first over of a Test innings? asked Kevin McDermott from England
The England seamer Ollie Robinson, making a sensational return to Test cricket after more than two years on the sidelines, dismissed Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra in his first over of last week's Lord's Test.

I cross-checked with the eminent Melbourne statistician Charles Davis, who agreed that Robinson was just the seventh man known to have taken three wickets in his first over of a Test innings (Charles points out that he is still searching for ball-by-ball data for around 20% of Tests). The first to do so was Sri Lanka's Nuwan Zoysa, who started the second over of the match against Zimbabwe in Harare in November 1999 with a hat-trick. Another left-armer, India's Irfan Pathan, went one better against Pakistan in Karachi in January 2006, taking a hat-trick in the very first over of the match.

Since then the following have also taken three wickets in their first over of a Test innings: Daniel Vettori for New Zealand vs Bangladesh in Mirpur in October 2008 (the tenth over of the innings); Haris Sohail for Pakistan vs Sri Lanka in Dubai in October 2017 (26th and last over of the second innings, and his only over); Scott Boland for Australia vs West Indies in Adelaide in December 2022 (sixth over of second innings); and Mitchell Starc for Australia vs West Indies in Kingston in July 2025 (first over of the second innings, starting West Indies' slide to 27 all out).

Lord's has just staged its 150th Test match, which I guess is the most. Which other grounds are close? asked Karan Singh Rathod from India
You're right that last week's Test between England and New Zealand was the 150th to be played at Lord's. The first one there was in 1884, and the 100th was as recently as 2000.

It will be a while before another ground reaches 150: only three have staged more than 100 so far. There have been 118 Tests at Melbourne, and 114 at Sydney, while The Oval will stage its 109th next week. The leading ground outside England and Australia is the Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand, with 70 to date.

Sharjah has staged the most one-day internationals (255), ahead of Harare (190), Sydney (162), Colombo's Premadasa Stadium (158) and the Melbourne Cricket Ground (152).

The identity of the ground that has staged the most men's T20 internationals is probably a surprise: it's the Gahanga Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, with 128. Al Amerat in Oman has held 121, and Dubai's International Stadium 109.

Josh Tongue took his 50th wicket in just his tenth Test. Was this a record, for England or everybody? asked Sammy Peters from England
The England fast bowler Josh Tongue started the first Test at Lord's with 49 wickets from nine previous matches, and soon reached 50 with the wicket of Tom Blundell. He finished the match with 54 wickets.

Only six England bowlers had more wickets than Tongue after ten Tests. The 19th-century Surrey speedster Tom Richardson leads the way for all countries with 71, then the next-best for England are Maurice Tate (65), Bobby Peel (60), Frank Tyson (58), Sydney Barnes and Wilfred Rhodes (57). Tich Freeman also had 54 wickets after ten Tests; Ian Botham had 53, George Lohmann 52, and Fred Trueman and Ken Higgs both 51.

Leading the way for other countries (but all behind Richardson) are Charles "Terror" Turner of Australia (69), the current Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya (67), Vernon Philander of South Africa (63), West Indies' Alf Valentine (62) and Yasir Shah of Pakistan (61).

Which Australian played only one Test, but has two baggy green caps? asked Tim Westcott from England
This lucky man is the Victoria opener Ken Eastwood, who played in the final Test of the 1970-71 Ashes series after the Australian selectors sensationally dropped their captain Bill Lawry. Eastwood was given two caps to try on for size - and no one ever asked for the spare one back, as he explained in this entertaining Cricket Monthly article in 2015.

And there's an update to a recent question about players who scored a century, took a five-for and made a stumping in a Test, from Paul Neazor from New Zealand
"There's one more - with a twist. Bevan Congdon of New Zealand scored seven Test centuries, bagged a five-for against India at Auckland in January 1976... and made a stumping, against Pakistan in Lahore in April 1965. However, because he was on as a substitute, deputising for Artie Dick, it doesn't count towards his career record."
