Clements leads South Alabama to 52-45 win over Idaho
MOBILE, Ala. -- Cody Clements threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two scores as South Alabama held on to beat Idaho 52-45 on Saturday.
The Vandals held a 24-7 halftime advantage as Idaho's defense thwarted South Alabama (4-4, 2-2 Sun Belt Conference) throughout the first half. That changed quickly in the second half when Xavier Johnson, who finished with 289 total yards, ran the opening kickoff back 100 yards and Devon Earl scooped up an Idaho fumble and sprinted 57 yards for the score to trail 24-21 with 3:08 left in the third quarter.
Clements passed to Gerald Everett from the 16 for a score and a 35-31 lead early in the fourth as the Jaguars scored 24 points in the final quarter.
Matt Linehan, who threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns, ran in from the 1 as Idaho (3-6, 2-4) trailed by a touchdown with 1:22 left. The ensuing onside kick failed.
