Johnson leads South Alabama past San Diego St., 24-27, in OT
SAN DIEGO -- Xavier Johnson ran for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, to help South Alabama beat San Diego State 34-27 on Saturday night.
Cody Clements finished with 270 yards passing and two touchdowns and Gerald Everett had eight receptions for 164 yards -- both career highs -- and a score for South Alabama (2-1).
On the first possession of overtime, facing third-and-2, Clements hit Everett for a 15-yard gain which gave South Alabama first-and-goal at the 2. Johnson punched it in on the next play to put the Jaguars up 34-27.
San Diego State (1-2) went backward on its ensuing drive and, on fourth-and 14 from the 29, Maxwell Smith's pass bounced out of the out-stretched arms of a diving Daniel Brunskill.
South Alabama trailed 27-24 when it took possession at its own 29 with 2:05 left in regulation and Aleem Sunanon's 46-yard field goal as time expired capped a nine-play, 42-yard drive to force overtime.
