Abnar carries Liberty past Monmouth, 34-24
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- D.J. Abnar had 39 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, leading Liberty past Monmouth 34-24 on Saturday.
After allowing Brandon Hill's game-tying, 37-yard touchdown pass to Darren Ambush late in the third, Liberty (7-3, 3-0 Big South) drove 77 yards on 15 plays in just over eight minutes. Abnar's 2-yard touchdown put the Flames up 31-24 with 10:19 remaining.
Chima Uzowihe sacked Hill on the Hawks' next series and forced a fumble that was recovered by Nick Newman, leading to John Lunsford's 27-yard field goal with 3:27 left.
Josh Woodrum threw for 203 yards on 13-of-19 passing with two touchdowns. His 13-yard score to Gabe Henderson put Liberty up 24-17 in the third.
Hill finished with 189 yards passing and also had a 68-yard strike to Hakeem Valles. Lavon Chaney added 14 carries for 92 yards for Monmouth (5-4, 0-3).
