South Dakota beats Northern Iowa in overtime 38-31
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Kevin Earl's 1-yard touchdown run in the second overtime led South Dakota over Northern Iowa 38-31 in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown Saturday.
Earl's overtime plunge capped a huge day, as he ran for two touchdowns and threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Coyotes (4-3, 3-1) back from a 21-point third quarter deficit to tie the game with five seconds in regulation.
Northern Iowa (4-3, 0-3) scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second and third quarters to put the Panthers up 28-7 late in the third.
But South Dakota stormed back as Earl completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Riley Donovan, then ran eight yards for a score, before leading the 7-play, 58-yard game tying drive, which ended in a 3-yard scoring strike to Terrance Terry as time wound down.
David Johnson led Northern Iowa with 181 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Evan Williams added two rushing touchdowns.
